Flight biomechanics

Our lab is thrilled to share a milestone from our flight biomechanics team researchers, Tawhid, Saheed, Tanzil, Mohim - we developed a dynamic, time- and phase-resolved way to see directional aerodynamic efficiency diverge during real flight, revealing exactly when and where forward-to-back versus back-to-forward motion separates. Aligned to the wingbeat cycle and scaled across multiple birds, the framework pinpoints phases and speed ranges where asymmetry peaks, rather than relying on simple averages. The analysis is supported by robust paired statistics and effect sizes, method agreement checks between classic and AI pipelines, and physics-based normalization to improve generalization across morphologies. It also detects behavior-linked regime shifts with change-point and state modeling and presents transparent confidence through uncertainty bands. Taken together, this end-to-end approach delivers a first-of-its-kind, time- and phase-aware view of directional asymmetry in avian flight.
